The autumn days swung soft around me, like cotton on my
skin. But as the embers of the summer lost their breath
and disappeared, my heart went cold, and only hollow
rhythms resounded from within.

Well, I'm already questionning whether or not I'll accept a new treeplanting contract next spring. Am I geek enough to take that into account?

Depends on how good the money is.
Hell, if I didn't have any other responsibilities, I'd take one of those tree-planting gigs (even if the pay was reasonable low) in a heartbeat. While it certainly looks like some of the hardest work I'd ever do in my life, for some reason, I'm inexplicably drawn to it.

I'm sure you'd love it!
Actually, the money I got offered is the best yet, to do less work than I'm used to, for a small company in British-Clumbia, really close to where they filmed the New Caprica and Algea planet scenes in BSG's 3rd season!
The problem is that it's quite hard to get some stability with such a lifestyle and finding a winter job is getting harder, as I keep quitting those to go back to the bush. But hey, maybe I'll just do contracts for Doctors Without Borders next year, so it could actually work out nicely.
We'll see, I got a "winter" job today so...

Maybe you want to hug them afterwards?

The day treeplanting will be for tree-huggers, you'll have loggers recycling...

The 'tree-hugger thing' (despite it's "that's so 70's" tedium) is funny to me because, in actuality, I'm all for cutting down a reasonable amount of tress and then using them to our advantage. Trees are one of the resources we should be exploiting. Timber is versatile, relatively easy to transport, and most importantly: (unlike oil) totally renewable.
I think I'm drawn to what Tup does because it's not pushing paper around--the kind of job most everyone I know is doing nowadays--but rather real actual physical work; the kind that puts your ass to sleep at night no matter what you've got on your mind.

Yeah, I just like to take the piss sometimes, what with the whole "Commie" thing and all.
I know what you mean though. Seems that the only way one's guaranteed to make a decent amount of money is to sit at a desk and be bored to tears, but I suppose all the low paid physical labourers find their jobs just as tedious and dream of a white collar existence.
We're all held back by our need for a sense of security; everyone gets off on knowing they can buy food the next week and that they'll be able to afford piano lessons for their kids, or just want to live up to everyone's expectations.
Personally I feel kind of stuck in it all, and it keeps me awake at night. It's 1:18am right now, I've been up since 8:00am and I don't feel the slightest bit tired because all I've done today is go to lectures and write some shitty-ass webpage. When I first started all this I was very enthusiastic because I really want to be able to do this computer stuff, but a few weeks in(just like every semester) I'm bored and sick of doing the same fucking thing every week.
Right now, even though it's 1:20am, I just want to go outside and do something fun, like have a big ass party or something and meet a whole bunch of new people and stay up all night talking to them, or vandalize something and run away giggling like a schoolboy. I really really need an adventure, and I don't tell anyone about this shit, but all I want to do is drop this whole college thing and fuck off backpacking around the world on my own and just do some interesting stuff.
But, that's not going to happen anytime soon because I'm too worried about money.
