Moeskido probably thinks I'm stalking him, but it was his post at another forum which led me here. I love the concept, because as I stated on another board, this "show" not only upsets the apple cart, it knocks it over, mulches it and sets it on fire. I love TOS, but I see no reason to maintain an almost quasi-religious adherence to it's approach. Exeter has the classic market down to a science, and there is something to be said for that as well. Nothing wrong with enjoying different visions. I admit, to a few WTFs along the way, as open minded as I like to think I am, but by and large, I've found myself reading the scripts with more enthusiasm. The character's actions have consequences from one episode to another...things are not wrapped up in a bow by the "hours" end.
This is a good thing, Miri....
My only disappointment thus far is that I want to see it, dream cast be damned! I got lots of questions, kids!

Welcome to the party! Beer (and maybe some other libations) is in the fridge and there might be some chips and sandwiches on the counter.
Up there we were heroes, fighting robot bitches...

Well, it just didn't feel proper lurking about. If I'm stalking, I'm apparently very open about it, and therefore not very good at it.
You posted. You promoted. I signed on!

Thank you very much, Forsythe. Per your comment on consequences from episode to episode, I think that is precisely the essence of what makes a good television drama. When you know that very little of what you're characters do from week to week is going to have any meaning, it makes you turn the channel (or it means you're watching Voyager or Enterprise).
Per your comment on the continuiphiles, I've got what you might call 'a past' with them. I experienced so much of this Star Trek fundamentalism on Trekweb (and the accompanying personal attacks for daring to disrespect their sacred orthodoxy), that it led to my decision to never enter another keystroke there again.
The desire for 'continuity porn' over a good story, on the part of many of the fans, has always seemed very strange to me. The canon has gotten to the point where it's like a giant rock chained to the legs of the writer(s) while he/they is/are trying to swim ashore.
I read this great article--that I've never been able to find again--that made the connection between the way Trek fans obsess over continuity at the expense of appreciating stories that provoke genuine emotional reactions in the reader/viewer (the very thing fiction is intended to do) with many of the unfeeling idiosyncrasies of high-functioning autistics. I need to find this article again. It made so much sense and explained so much. The idea is that fiction franchises that have very large mythologies tend to attract high-functioning autistics precisely because it gives them something to organize and cataloge (something high-functioning autistics take great comfort in).
Not that I'm making fun of autistics. I'm not. I have nothing but sympathy for them...but if this article is accurate--and the majority of continuity pornographers really are high-functioning autistics--it makes their obnoxious carrying on so much easier to tolerate.
I got lots of questions, kids!

I had the same problem uploading my avatar. I had to resize it to get it to upload.

It's a good idea to lower the quality too.

Jeremy, if you could find that article about the correlation between high-functioning autistics and Trek continuity-porn slaves, I'd be in your debt. What a great connection. |

I looked about for something along those lines...and ended up reading about the diagnosis of autism. Several of the symptoms revealed themselves to be interesting, but two specifically caught my eye:
" apparently inflexible adherence to specific, nonfunctional routines or rituals"
and
" persistent preoccupation with parts of objects"
To echo Jeremy's sentiments, I'm not trying to be insulting to those with autism. I just found this to be intriguing. It may well be a form of OCD for all I know. To be on the receiving end of a continuity rant is what prompts these thoughts anyway. Maybe the devil is in the details.

I'm recalling half a dozen discussions from the past two or three years, on two or three different Trek-related forums, where I tried to maintain a coherent back-and-forth with people who exhibited a great deal of something. Conversation was difficult to keep on topic, especially where disagreements were heated. Dissociation seemed inevitable.
Whether this was due to High-Functioning Autistim, Asperger's, some milder flavor of religious obssession or cognitive dissonance, or just plain lack of critical-thinking skills; it was hard to not react as though the other person was deliberately messing with me. I know I'm lumping together a lot of unrelated specifics, but there are times when it seems the Venn diagram has too many overlapping circles to allow useful information to be discerned.
Am I making sense? It's 1:20 am and I haven't had a decent beer in over a day and a half, it seems. Shudder. |

Case in point: Production photos of Trek XIs first day of shooting were released. Essentially, a bunch of people in hooded raincoats. That's fine. Heck, I was curious or I wouldn't be looking. The minute dissection of the boots, the pant legs and the potential colors of the collars being worn underneath, however, was a bit distressing. As I posted elsewhere, I'm not immune to the vagaries of my likes and dislikes. Opinions are fine, but this is borderline something. This movie is a couple of days into production and the peasants have already got their pitchforks, ready to strike, based on rumor and innuendo. These are the same people who will be first on line 12/25/08, to point out (vocally I might add) that the dilithium chamber should be more to the left, or some such nonsense. Discourse is great as is attention to detail, but messianic devotion at the expense of all else, including the fun, isn't for me.
It's late and I'm ranting.

No pitchforks here. I am pretty damned curious about the art design, though.

Oh, I'm gnawing at the bit to see what direction they're going in from a design standpoint, story etc...! Just not going to start a campaign if it isn't to my liking! ( People for a static and unchanging Star Trek!?! perhaps?)

The new movie will have some gorgeous art direction, I'm certain. Many creatives who must interpret the needs of movie and tv producers -- however inarticulately expressed -- come up with some of the loveliest production design ever seen in film, regardless of the quality of the project's writing. Whether XI's look speaks "Star Trek" to me probably won't be much of an issue. Abrams knows he has to appeal to two extremely different audiences with this thing, and his staff will know this, too. |

There's usually not too much trouble getting pretty things on the screen. Lost in Space was a pretty movie but it was bad. I'm hoping there's some substance in this movie. |
