Amen! Even though I've read only the first several episodes, I'm already impressed with ST:R. It has balls the size of basketballs and takes no prisoners, much akin to RDM's Galactica, but it also has the optimism that ST is renowned for, creating a more balanced viewpoint, unlike RDM's Galactica where it only depicts the negative aspects of humanity.
Oh, dude...I'm grinning like a big goof right now. Thank you so much.
But, as to your point, you're absolutely right; Trek doesn't have to loose it's optimistic liberal humanism in order to be interesting and relevant to today's world. And that notion was definately something that was in the back of mind when I was putting this 'nue' universe together.
Well said, Jeremy! I applaud you. Personally, I can't stand reality-tv. Even the very words, "reality-tv" makes me want to puke. These reality-tv shows are a piece of shit that deserves to be flush down the toliet, pronto.
I'm a big fan of Edward R. Murrow, and he once gave a speech (this was well before television really 'caught on' like we think of it), and he came right out and said that--if put in the wrong hands--the medium of television would degenerate into mindless bullshit (although Ed was too decent to ever use those words). He said that it would become the new 'cake', as in "let them eat cake"; the implication being that the medium had all the potential in world as a great education tool, but could easily become the means by which the upper-classes distracted the middle and lower classes from keeping an eye their own interests...and that is exactly what has happened.
The guy was a genius. I wish he was my grandpa.
There is no doubt in my mind that web-based series, as well as direct-to-DVD release are the wave of the future. One major advantage that these mediums have over regular network tv is that there is no network interference, thus, allowing the creator/s of the show fully realize their vision as the way they originally intended it to be. There are already quite a few web-based shows and direct-to-DVD release projects that may actually be far more profitable as well. It's simply a matter of time, but it will eventually become more common. Just wait and see. It's gonna be fuckin' great.
Totally. Just as long as we can keep TPTB from caving to the media's powerful lobby (which surpasses the freaking oil industry as regards to influence) and stop them from rigging the system like they've been doing since Reagan. And that can be done. We have all the power. We just have to not be afraid to use it.

As am I, dude. More Whitestar posts!
The autumn days swung soft around me, like cotton on my
skin. But as the embers of the summer lost their breath
and disappeared, my heart went cold, and only hollow
rhythms resounded from within.
