I'm feeling musical this evening (in fact, I'm starting to think that if I dont get back into music, I'm gonna lose my damn mind).

Annie Lennox: Cover of Neil Young's Dont Let it Bring You Down

Jane's Addiction: Three Days

Sigur Rose: Hoppipolla

Sigur Ros: Untitled (a reworking of this track was an early candidate for the opening credits sequence)

Temple of the Dog: Say Hello to Heaven

Alanis Morissette: Still (An Open Letter From God)

The autumn days swung soft around me, like cotton on my
skin. But as the embers of the summer lost their breath
and disappeared, my heart went cold, and only hollow
rhythms resounded from within.

And I feel like posting some Trek-inspired lyrics...

You want a guy who can bring the Bacon
And you want a guy with savoir-faire
Somebody who can take control of it
Someone with cool black shiny hair
(YEAH!)

You don't want a boyfriend
What you want is Mr. Spock
To come to your wasteland
And destroy the roh-oh-oh-oh-oh-bot
Something more than human
Someone with blood that's cold and green
You want something better... than me

Captain Kirk went to the planet *laser sound*
And there he fought the man-lizard
He saved the ship, invented the gunpowder
But that's just not good enough for you, is it?!
Noooooooo!
You don't want a boyfriend
What you want is Mr. Spock
To come to your wasteland
And destroy the roh-oh-oh-oh-oh-bot
Something more than human
Someone with blood that's cold and green
You want something better than meeee..meeeee....

You sit all night at your computer
Drinking Diet Dr. Pepper
Looking for an answer to it all....
Say the words! Say the words! Say! Say! Say the words!

You don't want a boyfriend
What you want is Mr. Spock
To come to your wasteland
And destroy the roh-oh-oh-oh-oh-bot
Something more than human
Someone with blood that's cold and green
You want something better than meeeee... meeeeee... than me!

I have a new theme song...

Seth Shapiro got his law degree
He moved to Brooklyn from Schenectady, '93
Got some clients in the food industry
He says it's not the money, it's the recipes

He calls his mom, says he's doing fine
She's got somebody on the other line
Puts Coldplay on, pours a glass of wine
Curls up with a book about organized crime

When it's late, and it's hot
And a date with the Late Show's all that you've got
Don't give out, don't give up
One of these nights you might find someone to love

Beth McKenzie got the job of her dreams
Retouching photos for a magazine aimed at teens
It's Thursday night she should be out on the scene
But she's sitting at home watching "The King of Queens"

There's something wrong that she can't describe
She takes the contacts out of her eyes
Sets the alarm for 6:45
So she can get a little exercise

When it's late, and it's hot
And an hour in the shower is the best that you've got
Don't give out, don't give up
One of these nights you might find someone to love

And you're not the only one who's lonely

Seth Shapiro is trying in vain
To hail a taxi in the morning in the pouring rain
Beth McKenzie sees one just up ahead
She cuts in front of him and leaves him for dead

Let me tell you a story to chill the bones
About a thing that I saw
One night wandering in the everglades
I'd one drink but no more

I was rambling, enjoying the bright moonlight
Gazing up at the stars
Not aware of a presence so near to me
Watching my every move

Feeling scared and I fell to my knees
As something rushed me from the trees
Took me to an unholy place
And that is where I fell from grace

Then they summoned me over to join in with them
To the dance of the dead
Into the circle of fire I followed them
Into the middle I was led

As if time had stopped still I was numb with fear
But still I wanted to go
And the blaze of the fire did no hurt upon me
As I walked onto the coals

And I felt I was in a trance
And my spirit was lifted from me
And if only someone had the chance
To witness what happened to me

And I danced and I pranced and I sang with them
All had death in their eyes
Lifeless figures they were undead all of them
They had ascended from hell

As I danced with the dead
My free spirit was laughing and howling down at me
Below my undead body
Just danced the circle of dead

Until the time came to reunite us both
My spirit came back down to me
I didn't know if I was alive or dead
As the others all joined in with me

By luck then a skirmish started
And took the attention away from me
When they took their gaze from me
Was the moment that I fled

I ran like hell faster than the wind
But behind I did not glance
One thing that I did not dare
Was to look just straight ahead

When you know that your time has come around
You know you'll be prepared for it
Say your last goodbyes to everyone
Drink and say a prayer for it

When you're lying in your sleep, when you're lying in your bed
And you wake from your dreams to go dancing with the dead
When you're lying in your sleep, when you're lying in your bed
And you wake from your dreams to go dancing with the dead

To this day I guess I'll never know
Just why they let me go
But I'll never go dancing no more
'Til I dance with the dead

Bowie song that included as lyrics a lot of what Tup had said.

Basically, the line "God is an American"...

Ferland's song was written in 1970 and refers to every nation thinking God is on their side. The singer then have God throwing shit at all of them...

But Bowie's song is awesome as well!

Here's my homemade translation:

God is an American
God is German
God is Russian
God is French

And God said
You think it's easy to choose
With your big mouths
You think it's easy to be a God
A man, a Holy Spirit too

Sometimes, I'd burn everything
Like I did in Sodom
Or I'd redo the flooding
Like I did to Noah

And if I have to say it
In words you'll understand

You piss me...

And that's not all

St-Peter is sad,
Your fathers are crying,
Your mothers, brothers, sisters,
And you make me sad too!

You think it's easy to sleep
With your big mouths
You know what it is to be here
There and everywhere else at the same time

(chorus)

Sometimes I'd reset everything
Without Eve and Adam
Only dogs and cats
fields and forests

(chorus)

And if I have to say it again
In words you'll understand
You piss me...

And again

St-Peter is sad,
Your fathers are crying,
Your mothers, brothers, sisters,
And you make me sad too!

Ah... "Earthling". Bowie's last truly great studio album. I was supposed to interview him when he played in DC on that tour but it got canceled the day of (the interview, not the show) smiley

Ziggy Stardust was one of the greatest rock albums of all time. I'll take that over Sgt. Pepper any day.

Fucking awesome song I've been hearing on our local radio station lately: "Young Folks" by Peter Bjorn and John. One great thing about Columbia is the fact that we're blessed with a truly confused radio station that plays just about anything that could be glopped into the realm of "alternative" or "new wave" - going all the way back to the Velvet Underground and Bowie.

if i told you things i did before
told you how i used to be
would you go along with someone like me
if you knew my story word for word
had all of my history
would you go along with someone like me

i did before and had my share
it didn't lead nowhere
i would go along with someone like you
it doesn't matter what you did
who you were hanging with
we could stick around and see this night through

and we don't care about the young folks
talkin' bout the young style
and we don't care about the old folks
talkin' 'bout the old style too
and we don't care about their own faults
talkin' 'bout our own style
all we care 'bout is talking
talking only me and you

usually when things has gone this far
people tend to disappear
no-one will surprise me unless you do

i can tell there's something goin' on
hours seems to disappear
everyone is leaving i'm still with you

it doesn't matter what we do
where we are going to
we can stick around and see this night through

and we don't care about the young folks
talkin' bout the young style
and we don't care about the old folks
talkin' 'bout the old style too
and we don't care about their own faults
talkin' 'bout our own style
all we care 'bout is talking
talking only me and you

and we don't care about the young folks
talkin' bout the young style
and we don't care about the old folks
talkin' 'bout the old style too
and we don't care about their own faults
talkin' 'bout our own style
all we care 'bout is talking
talking only me and you
talking only me and you

talking only me and you
talking only me and you

It's sort of an electronic alterna-pop tune...I'm really diggin' it. With the surprise stardom of Amy Winehouse and Joss Stone pulling jazz/soul/motown out into the radio playlists, Christiana Auguleria (sp?) bringing big band back to the masses, stuff like this, and continuing strong work from groups like the Killers, we seem to be in something of a renaissance of a wide variety of musical sounds. I'm not even sure where it came from...a couple of years ago even the offbeat radio stations didn't even seem to have much going in the way of different sounds. Hopefully this can keep going for a while. smiley

Been crankin' some Jackson Browne myself lately...

Looking out at the road rushing under my wheels
Looking back at the years gone by like so many summer fields
In sixty-five I was seventeen and running up one-o-one
I don't know where I'm running now, I'm just running on

Running on - running on empty
Running on - running blind
Running on - running into the sun
But I'm running behind

Gotta do what you can just to keep your love alive
Trying not to confuse it with what you do to survive
In sixty-nine I was twenty-one and I called the road my own
I don't know when that road turned onto the road I'm on

Running on - running on empty
Running on - running blind
Running on - running into the sun
But I'm running behind

Everyone I know, everywhere I go
People need some reason to believe
I don't know about anyone but me
If it takes all night, that'll be all right
If I can get you to smile before I leave

Looking out at the road rushing under my wheels
I don't know how to tell you all just how crazy this life feels
I look around for the friends that I used to turn to to pull me through
Looking into their eyes I see them running too

Running on - running on empty
Running on - running blind
Running on - running into the sun
But I'm running behind

Honey you really tempt me
You know the way you look so kind
I'd love to stick around but I'm running behind
You know I don't even know what I'm hoping to find
Running into the sun but I'm running behind

Weird Al

THE SAGA BEGINS

A long, long time ago
In a galaxy far away
Naboo was under an attack
And I thought me and Qui-Gon Jinn
Could talk the federation into
Maybe cutting them a little slack
But their response, it didn't thrill us
They locked the doors and tried to kill us
We escaped from that gas
Then met Jar Jar and Boss Nass
We took a bongo from the scene
And we went to Theed to see the Queen
We all wound up on Tatooine
That's where we found this boy...

Oh my my this here Anakin guy
May be Vader someday later - now he's just a small fry
And he left his home and kissed his mommy goodbye
Sayin' "Soon I'm gonna be a Jedi"
"Soon I'm gonna be a Jedi"

Did you know this junkyard slave
Isn't even old enough to shave
And he can use the Force, they say
Ahh, do you see him hitting on the queen
Though he's just nine and she's fourteen
Yah, he's probably gonna marry her someday
Well, I knew he built C-3PO
And I've heard how fast his pod can go
And we were broke, it's true
So we made a wager or two
He was a prepubescent flyin' ace
And the minute Jabba started off that race
Well, I knew who would win first place
Oh yes, it was our boy

We started singin' ...
My my this here Anakin guy
May be Vader someday later - now he's just a small fry
And he left his home and kissed his mommy goodbye
Sayin' "Soon I'm gonna be a Jedi"
"Soon I'm gonna be a Jedi"

Now we finally got to Coruscant
The Jedi Council we knew would want
To see how good the boy could be
So we took him there and we told the tale
How his midi-chlorians were off the scale
And he might fulfill that prophecy
Oh, the Council was impressed, of course
Could he bring balance to the Force?
They interview the kid
Oh, training they forbid
Because Yoda sensed in him much fear
And Qui-Gon said "Now listen here"
"Just stick it in your pointy ear"
"I still will teach this boy"

He was singin' ...
My my this here Anakin guy
May be Vader someday later - now he's just a small fry
And he left his home and kissed his mommy goodbye
Sayin' "Soon I'm gonna be a Jedi"
"Soon I'm gonna be a Jedi"

We caught a ride back to Naboo
'Cause Queen Amidala wanted to
I frankly would've liked to stay
We all fought in that epic war
And it wasn't long at all before
Little Hotshot flew his plane and saved the day
And in the end some Gunguns died
Some ships blew up and some pilots fried
A lot of folks were croakin'
The battle droids were broken
And the Jedi I admire most
Met up with Darth Maul and now he's toast
Well, I'm still here and he's a ghost
I guess I'll train this boy

And I was singin' ...
My my this here Anakin guy
May be Vader someday later - now he's just a small fry
And he left his home and kissed his mommy goodbye
Sayin' "Soon I'm gonna be a Jedi"
"Soon I'm gonna be a Jedi"

We were singin' ...
My my this here Anakin guy
May be Vader someday later - now he's just a small fry
And he left his home and kissed his mommy goodbye
Sayin' "Soon I'm gonna be a Jedi"

Funny stuff...love Weird Al...

from Wiki

This part cracks me up...

McLean not only approved the song, but he has also since said that his children have played it so much that he has a tendency to accidentally sing Yankovic's lyrics when performing "American Pie" in concert.[1] According to Yankovic's official website, George Lucas' reaction to first hearing the song was a "big, big smile."

ok...I'm so mired in all of my old shit, I really need to take note of some of the newer (ish) stuff that's happening musically. This Finninsh band I found completely by accident, but I'm so hooked. The band is called Nightwish. Stop laughing at me if I'm late to the party.
Symphonic Goth Metal. Good shit. Bought most of their back catalogue today.
Like the new lead singer, too...

http://stage6.divx.com/Nightwish/video/1526043/Nightwish---Amaranth

Of course, their North American tour starts at a local club near my house. And it's the only sold-out show so far.
Dammit.
This sort of thing makes me want to get back into playing again...

Interesting....are they playing at Jaxx?

Last week someone told me to check out Papa Raoch's last album (its about a year old) called The paramour Sessions...yes...Papa Roach...who i wrote off with the rest of that nu-metal rap garbage...they don't really do the rap bit anymore (well...just a tad) and the album is actually really good. I was pleasantly surprised.

Here's a vid link:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NtIswgQ5S4o

So that CD has been spinning in my stereo this week, along with a NIN bootleg I recently downloaded...Trent doing an almost all-acoustic set to a crowd of about 100 people back in 2000, which is frickin amazing.
