..Why the fuck did GM not make this car?
It's probably one of the very few American-built cars I've ever thought was worth shit. I don't know how American car builders can still insist on selling you guys crap when they could do so much better, and have it be worth the extra cash.

I really don't know. Cadillac did adopt that general design as their new corporate styling theme, which has produced some pretty good-looking vehicles. Often the concept designs that roll out of the studio would be prohibitively expensive to produce for some reason or another. Compare the Corvette Mako Shark to the 63-67 model or the Mako Shark II to the 68-82 model for a good example. The concept Sharks just couldn't be produced at any sort of reasonable price point.
BTW, I found a cool book in the clearance section of the bookstore yesterday - a British volume about the world's worst cars. It's brutally, hilariously sarcastic in that peculiarly British manner.

I bet a great portion of those crappy cars were British ones from the Leyland era. I think the fact that all our car manufacturers went belly-up speaks volumes about how much more discerning British consumers are when it comes to cars.

But that's just stupid. It's fair enough when we talk about Chevrolets and Fords, because those cars are meant to be affordable, but Cadillac is supposed to be the benchmark (at least in America) for quality and luxury; they're supposed to be expensive, exclusive and upmarket, which is what that Sixteen was.
But it seems commonplace over there for the motor companies to sell under-engineered cars, which is sort of the opposite of the European market, where carmakers are pressured by competition to find ways of improving cars while keeping costs manageable.

Over here, the carmakers - GM in particular - have huge financial pressures from pension plans and health insurance. In response, they are under pressure to keep manufacturing costs to a bare minimum. If a panel would cost too much to stamp, it gets redesigned to something easier to produce. Same goes for everything - it's why too many American cars, even luxury models, had chintzy interiors for so long. The C5 Corvette was a horrible offender in that category.

So basically, you guys got the whole Leyland issue too, except that Americans are too caught up in fucking stupid patriotism to realise that the imports are much better?

The past few years, GM has been above average in the quality rankings - even topping out a few categories, while the imports, especially the Toyota and Mercedes lines, have been slipping.
You might notice that Vauxhall, Opel and Holden are still around.

I think Ford (especially the original Ford marque) have made and still make some brilliant cars, just not for the American market, though I think they made some stupid decisions with (again) luxury brands by fixing bits of Fords and Volvos onto them.
Vauxhalls on t'other hand...Well...ugh. But still, Vauxhalls are engineered to compete with European rivals.
I just don't get why they don't sell you guys the same quality cars as they do us, or perhaps why consumers over there don't demand any more.

Actually this car is going into production it's called the Caddilac 16 for it's V16 Engine. It's a limited run Super Car priced out in the $250,000 to $300,000 range built to compete with the Phantom, Bently and Maybach.

Maybe with Bentleys, I think it'd need to be more expensive to compete directly with the Maybachs and the Rollers.
