English is Earth's dominant language now. In 300 years I'd imagine that everyone is brought up at least bilingualy, and I know from experience that when you learn two languages as primary languages, you speak both as a native speaker, which explains why Picard has a clean English accent (and sounds convincing in French, though I can't judge).

Since they probably won't cast me in the role, I applaud your choice of April Grace. I'd like to throw in my nomination of Regina King. While April Grace is lovely, Ms. King possesses the surreal beauty of the original.
But what if the new Uhura was a "real" African? One of those unbearably beautiful, whip-thin, 6', blue-black Massai women with a close-shaved head, huge almond eyes and tribal scarring sprinkled across her high cheekbones, as tough and smart and elegant as 'our' Uhura. An Oxford/Daystrum-educated anthropologist linguist software engineer who could talk bad about your mother in 27 languages because in the 23rd century, that's who the Chief Communications Officer on the Federation's flagship would be. If done without caricature or sterotype, it could be wonderful.
Now, that would be boldly going.

girl6, that is a great freaking idea! My characterization of Uhura was also that she was much more religious (Muslim in fact; she's a part of Starfleet's chaplin corps in addition to her shipboard duties) and higher in the chain of command. I also intend to really focus on the fact that she's a singer. I forget which episode it was, but Uhura was walking around crooning to herself (even doing so while she was on duty). I LOVED that (I'm a vocalist myself). I'm not sure what it's going to mean storywise...but I'm doing something with it.
I also imagined a sexy accent as well. But the notion of the close croped hair, the height and strength, the svelt body-type etc is a great idea. But I do think Grace can pull that off. One of the reasons I chose her was how well she just dissappears into a character (and because she's hot as hell). Another of the reasons I wanted Grace is her beautiful skin; Uhura had gorgeous flawless skin; when I was kid I couldn't take my eyes off the leggy chick behind the captain. Although in ST(R), I assure you that Uhura will be much more than that. In fact, she is the most imporant guest character in season 2.
Regina King from Higher Learning, Ray and Jerry McQuire, right? She's great. Her emotions always seem like they're on the verge of just exploding. That part when Ray was writing Hit the Road Jack was amazing. I found the movie a bit needlessly 'downbeat' at times, but the acting from everyone (even the little dude that played Willow) was great.
BTW, her small little part towards the beginning of Singleton's 'Boyz in the Hood' cracks me up.

and disappeared, my heart went cold, and only hollow
rhythms resounded from within.

In TOS, Uhura showed off her singing chops on a couple of occassions. Charlie X and The Conscience of the King come to mind. I don't know if it showed up at all in later seasons or not. |

It's a great character trait. I guess they sort of did it again in Star Trek V, but I could never tell if that was supposed to be Uhura singing, or if it was just supposed to be score. Either way, I cringe during part of the movie. It was just dumb.

Among other dumb things.
There was still a few gems: I, for one, always loved the beginning of the movie, the opening on Nimbus III, the whole vacation part up to their return on the dysfunctionnal ship.
The flashbacks into McCoy and Spock pasts were also very interesting. Kirk being too strong to fall for the trick...ahem...pushing a little. The whole god thing. Yuk!
Oh, and on the Uhura subject, I agree with Girl6 suggestions, but I'd like to suggest Fatou N'Diaye, a French/Senegalese actress who played a Rwandese Hutu during the 1993 genocide in a French-Canadian movie called "Un Dimanche a Kigali" (A Sunday in Kigali), the first movie entirely filmed in Rwanda since the genocide. Despite being filmed in french, you probably can find a subtitled version in a video store with a good international selection, but the book is better:

(She's the one on the right. The guy, Luc Picard, despite his clueless face in the pic is a great actor.)
And the great thing about a virtual series is that it doen't matter if she can't speak english. But I think she actually does!
Anyways, just extending your boundaries, guys!
