Rich brought up something I completely overlooked: what is ST(R)'s Starfleet Motto? It's a good question that just never occurred to me. I sometimes forget about stuff like this. Sorry.
Why cant it just be the same one as before, you ask? Well, Rich explained to a tee why it doesn't work for ST(R) here. And I agree with him.
Anyway, this prompted quite a bit of discussion on the subject, and five great ideas came out of it. Unfortunately I like them all and I just cant come to a decision about which one it should be.
The only thing I am sure about is that the motto has to be in Latin. No good reason, really (although I was raised catholic, so maybe that has something to do with it).
Here are the choices:
From Rich:
VENERATIO INTELLIGENDO PACIS
"Respect, Understanding, Peace"
From SpiritOne:
RECEDENTIA ULTRA ASTRUM
"Far beyond the Stars"
From Benedict Baltar:
PER ARDUA AD ASTRA
"Through Struggles to the Stars"
From WTR1982:
USQUEQUAQUE ALIQUANTULUS PORRO
"Always a little Further"
From Tupperfan:
AD ASTRA USQUE AD ASTRA
"From Star to Star"
What do you think? There can only be one. Whichever of the five emerges as the clear winner will become ST(R)'s official version of the Starfleet Motto, and be added to the updated Enterprise Mission Patch.
The autumn days swung soft around me, like cotton on my
skin. But as the embers of the summer lost their breath
and disappeared, my heart went cold, and only hollow
rhythms resounded from within.

My choice is "PER ARDUA AD ASTRA".
The other options are good as well, but this one seems more catchy to me. Not sure why; maybe just because the words are shorter and because of the alliteration.

RECEDENTIA ULTRA ASTRUM
"Far beyond the Stars"
About the Best Trek Ever.
Yes we can to justice and equality.
Yes we can to opportunity and prosperity.
Yes we can heal this nation.
Yes we can repair this world.
Yes we can.

I'm torn. "Respect Understanding Peace" is something I'd expect the MIrror-Starfleet to use, in characteristic Orwellian fashion. But it's the one I like the most, if not by much.
The RAF's "Per Ardua Ad Astra" is almost pessimistic, as though Starfleet expects to always have to struggle through something. It might have been adopted during or after a major conflict, as another morale booster.
I guess I don't feel strongly about any of those choices. |

I'd also go with Spirit's RECEDENTIA ULTRA ASTRUM (Far beyond the Stars).
But they all have something.

I like Per Ardua Ad Astra. It seems to me that an alliance of such diverse species and nationalities as the Federation would almost have to be born out of some sort of struggle that involved several loose allies (or even former enemies) facing something that none of them could handle alone. Military, diplomatic, natural disaster...the source of the struggle doesn't matter. Just that something pushed them to banding together under one flag.
If this version of Starfleet was more dedicated to exploration (as in the original Trek universe), then I'd go with Recedentia Ultra Astrum.

I just think it involves something more, in regards to the way Reborn is itself in comparison to "conventional" Trek...
But yeah, Per Ardua Ad Astra has something to it as well...
Without any real goal to impose new choices, but just for fun, here's one for the UFP: Ad Astra Usque Ad Astra ("From Star to Star"

While my first instinct is to vote in favor of myself I have to say that I really like Tups new choice of:
"Ad Astra Usque Ad Astra ("From Star to Star"

One day someone is going to have to explain to me why Latin is so often italicized.
And if anyone makes an Italy/italicized crack, I'm going to club them with a sandal.

Reed: Are they leather?
Dirk: No, they're Italian.
Tup, your suggestion is fantastic. I'm adding it to the choices.

I'd have to go with "Far Beyond...", however, were someone to come up with something better that had something to do with peace in it, I'd vote for that.

I think Per Ardua Pad Astra sounds right so I'll go with that. (Not the most scientific approach, I know)...
How about Ut Quam Nos Volvo. (That's how we roll!) ?
Nah, I didn't think so, either

I would tend to be biased towards my own, but 'PER ARDUA AD ASTRA' makes sense too.
In the sense that; if all else for Star Trek in this version held true (the decimating world war, the struggles of the Romulan war, the 'Cold War' with the Klinks, also the fact that humans (and I'm betting all the other races) had a struggle to get into space. The Laika's, the Apollo 1's, the Challengers and the Columbias, the 'This space Angency is just wasting money' complainers (I'm sure the Vulcans at least had some 'logical' reasons for not bothering with twiddling into space.
Then again, mine covers that aspect too.
But yeah, as it woudln't be proper to vote for myself, Benedict Baltar's one comes in a close second.
