The autumn days swung soft around me, like cotton on my
skin. But as the embers of the summer lost their breath
and disappeared, my heart went cold, and only hollow
rhythms resounded from within.

Very nice. I have to admit a certain fondness for the old engineering spiral, though. |

I, on the other hand, do not mind an Engineering insignia that makes me think of Engineering. With the exception of the sciences one and the command "star" (which is so ingrained in our consciousness now that we can't forget it), the logos pretty much make sense. |

I always thought the spiral looked like a wrench. Maybe it's just me. |

Stare at it for a really long time...
It'll give you a splitting headache!!

Yeah, 'illustrative' was what I was going for. I wanted something that when you looked at it, you had an almost Jungian-like recognition; an immediate understanding of what it meant. Plus it takes the low-tech 'earth tones' track that ST(R) is all about.
We can all agree that the elongated star-thingee is something you cant change (I dont know what the technical name for that symbol is). You cant change it. You just...well, you cant. Think of it as the Mark II Viper of ST(R).
However, you mentioned the 'science' symbol. According to my research, that's the universal symbol for science.

"Chet...my name is Chet...and I didn't think it was whale's dick, honey."
Bill Paxon deserved a freaking an Oscar for Weird Science.
Another favorite moment from him in the movie has got to be:
"I'm telling mom and dad everything...and I'm even considering making up some shit!"

"Are those my grandparents?"
"Yes"
"What are they doing in there, are they dead?"
"No, their fine, But frankly they just weren't having a good time at the party"
"Weren't having a good time! So I supose you think being catatonic in a closet is better?"
